HSG and SSG
What is HSG / SSG?
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) and Saline Sonography are diagnostic tests used to evaluate the uterus and fallopian tubes. HSG uses an X-ray with contrast dye to check for blockages in the tubes, while SSG uses ultrasound with saline to assess the uterine cavity. These tests are important in identifying causes of infertility and planning effective treatments.
How are the Tests Performed?
Both procedures are simple and performed in an outpatient setting. In HSG, a contrast dye is gently introduced into the uterus and X-ray images are taken to visualize the tubes. In SSG, sterile saline is introduced into the uterus and ultrasound is used to view the cavity.

Importance of HSG and SSG in Fertility Evaluation
Blockages or abnormalities in the uterus and fallopian tubes are common reasons for infertility in women. HSG and SSG offer critical insights into these areas without the need for surgery. HSG can detect blocked fallopian tubes, which prevent the egg and sperm from meeting. SSG provides detailed visualization of the uterine lining, helping to identify fibroids, polyps, adhesions, or congenital anomalies.
Together, these procedures allow fertility specialists to uncover hidden causes of infertility and recommend effective, minimally invasive treatments early in the process.
When Should You Consider HSG / SSG?
Hysterosalpingography (HSG) and Sonohysterography (SSG) are often recommended when couples have been trying to conceive for more than six to twelve months without success. These tests are also crucial for women with a history of pelvic infections or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), as such conditions may cause scarring or blockages in the reproductive tract. Women who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss are advised to undergo HSG or SSG to check for structural issues that may affect embryo implantation.
In addition, these procedures are valuable if there is a suspicion of blocked fallopian tubes or endometrial abnormalities, which can prevent conception. They are also commonly performed before or during fertility treatments such as IUI or IVF to ensure that the uterus and fallopian tubes are in optimal condition. Women experiencing irregular menstrual cycles or abnormal uterine bleeding may also benefit from these tests, as they help identify hidden uterine pathologies. Getting HSG or SSG done early helps prevent delays in diagnosis, ensuring timely treatment and a smoother fertility journey.
What Conditions Do These Tests Help Detect?
HSG and SSG are powerful diagnostic tools that provide valuable insights into the reproductive system. One of the most important findings from HSG is the detection of blocked fallopian tubes, which are a major cause of infertility. SSG, on the other hand, offers a detailed view of the uterine cavity and can clearly reveal fibroids, polyps, and other growths that may interfere with pregnancy.
Both tests are highly effective in diagnosing uterine septum or adhesions (Asherman’s Syndrome), which can disrupt normal implantation. HSG can also detect hydrosalpinx, a condition where fluid accumulates in the fallopian tubes, reducing the chances of successful conception. Additionally, these procedures help identify various endometrial abnormalities or scarring that may go unnoticed with routine evaluations. By detecting these conditions, fertility specialists can plan appropriate surgical or non-surgical interventions, improving fertility outcomes and enhancing the chances of a healthy pregnancy.
