Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

What is IUI?

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a simple and commonly used fertility treatment that increases the chances of conception by placing prepared sperm directly into the uterus. This procedure is recommended for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or cervical issues, and can be done in a natural or stimulated cycle.

How is the Procedure Performed?

The procedure is quick, painless, and performed in a clinical setting. First, the semen sample is collected and specially processed to separate healthy, motile sperm. Using a fine catheter, these sperm are gently placed into the uterine cavity at the time of ovulation, increasing the chances of fertilization.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is suitable for individuals or couples facing certain fertility challenges:

Post-Treatment Care and Monitoring

After the IUI procedure, patients may need to follow specific instructions such as avoiding strenuous activities. Follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor the effectiveness of the procedure and the progression of pregnancy if conception occurs. Pregnancy tests are typically conducted 14 days after the procedure to determine if implantation was successful.

Follow-up visits monitor the procedure’s success, and progesterone may be prescribed to support implantation. A pregnancy test is done 14 days after IUI to check for hCG. If positive, further tests will confirm pregnancy. If negative, the fertility team will discuss next steps, such as another cycle or alternative treatments.

Success Rates of IUI

The success rates of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) vary based on several key factors, including the age of the woman, the underlying cause of infertility, and the quality of sperm used in the procedure.

Women under the age of 35 generally experience higher success rates, as younger eggs tend to have better quality and are more likely to result in successful pregnancies. Success rates can decrease for women over 35, particularly as egg quality declines with age.

On average, IUI success rates range from 10-20% per cycle. However, success rates are higher with fertility medications, and can improve with additional treatments like ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) for male infertility.
